What Should I Prioritize To Remodel My Home?
April 19, 2022What Home Improvement Projects Should I Do in the Summer?
May 25, 2022In some states, such as Florida for example, the windy weather is never far away. Wind damage in Florida is thought to cause over $50 billion of building damage annually. In fact, approximately $35 billion of which is related to damage done to private residences. In Nebraska, through the first 25 days of April 2022, there were at least 19 days with wind gusts greater than or equal to 30 mph, according to data from the National Weather Service. Different wind speeds have different risk levels assigned to them. The risks associated with hurricanes and tornados, which killed over 100 Americans in 2021, are fairly obvious. However, it is useful to have a guideline of what wind speed can pose what level of threat. Some winds will cause property damage and rip off parts of a roof while some speeds can cause personal injury.
How Much Wind Does It Take To Damage a Roof?
Wind Speed Classification
The National Weather Service (NWS) has recently published a list of wind speeds and the risk associated with them. Listed below are five wind speed levels with their risks attached. Note there is some overlap between categories.
Low-risk: 20 – 25 mph
These are the speeds at which weather is first considered as windy officially. During these speeds, wind gusts may reach up to 30 mph but the risk of structural damage and injury is minimal.
Moderate-low risk: 25 – 30 mph
At these wind speeds, bigger tree branches will start to sway with the potential to scratch a roof. Weaker and older branches may break off and drop. Keep an eye out for swaying powerlines as an indication of wind strength.
Moderate-high risk: 30 – 40 mph
When winds reach speeds of 30 to 40 miles per hour, a wind warning advisory will be issued by the NWS. If the wind is picking up, turn the weather on as even stronger winds could be on their way. Objects on your property need to be secured as there is a risk that these could be blown about and could cause damage to buildings.
High risk: 40 – 55 mph
The NSW will issue a public high wind watch at these speeds. Smaller branches will break off when subjected to these speeds. There is a risk of curling shingles as well as roof shingles being lifted and broken. Walking outside will be just about impossible. Winds above 45mph are quite likely to cause some form of property damage.
Extreme/Severe risk: 55 mph and higher
Such wind speeds equate to being a major storm. Winds sustaining speeds of 55mph to 65mph and higher are very likely to cause significant, major property damage. In some cases, a roof could be ripped off. In fact, some buildings face the risk of being moved off their foundations. Contact a local roofing company immediately to assess for storm damage and see if your home or business needs roof repairs.
Be Roof Conscious
Roof damage is the gateway for winds to enter the interior of a home and cause internal damage, apart from letting the accompanying rains in. Fortunately, roof shingles are graded to protect against speeds of up to 60mph.
In territories that are prone to hurricanes or tornados, the requirement is for roofs to withstand wind speeds of up to 150mph. These roofs are typically made from metal roofing materials. The average roof and home are at risk when winds get up to speeds around 70mph to 90mph. That is not to say though that lesser winds can’t cause roof damage. It is possible for a 50mph gust of wind to damage a roof, especially older roofs and roofs that have been neglected.
Good Advice
Before buying a home ask for some form of roof maintenance evidence, especially for older homes. If you are new to an area, it is best to investigate the common wind speeds and when to expect them. This will allow you to take proactive steps to secure your investment.
