When to Remove Snow From Roof
January 17, 2022It used to be the case that a basement wasn’t regarded as important as a bathroom or kitchen. Therefore, as little should be spent on an unfinished basement home improvement project as possible. Nowadays, that thinking has changed. This is partly due to the COVID 19 pandemic, which has many of us working from home and needing more space. Faced with buying a bigger home, smaller homeowners are opting to invest in remodeling their basements instead. Many people are finding out that it is also a great investment, as it adds value to the property. Basement remodeling ideas and trends range from home theaters and wine cellars to home offices, game rooms, and basement bars. Let’s explore some ways you can save money and enhance your basement living spaces.
Basement Remodeling Ideas
Prioritize needs
A basement remodeling project should achieve a balance between functionality and aesthetics, and, most importantly, meet the needs of the family. With those factors in mind, many finished basements are now multipurpose. It’s amazing to think of what you can achieve with a limited budget and modern, minimalist designs. Be decisive. Have a list of your needs and then arrange them in order of priority. Then see which needs you can combine. List the combinations in order of preference. This will give you a wish list to discuss with your designer or builder. Then, in consultation with them, a final decision can be made.
Space
Ultimately the decisions you make will be guided by the amount of square footage in the basement. It may be possible to increase the basement space by removing existing columns or walls. This will allow you to create a more open basement design. However, that is only if the basement walls and columns you decide to remove are not structural – ie, holding up the house. Place as much of the furniture as possible on lockable wheels, including the bar, couch, bed, desk, toy box, and closets if they are not built-in. This will make cleaning easier and allow for easier reconfiguration.
Home office
A home office doesn’t have to take up the entire basement. Part of it can still be used as storage space. The main goal when building a home office is to encourage productivity. One idea is to add a small toilet, a kitchenette, a sink, an under-counter fridge as well as wall-mounted cabinets to house coffee and cups. The reason for the toilet is so that you can avoid going upstairs and becoming distracted by whatever is going on.
Bedrooms
Basement bedrooms have traditionally been reserved for guests. However, older kids need their own space and a more formal area to study. Make sure the extra bedroom allows for a double bed so that guests can use the space. In order to maximize space, consider under-bed storage. A bathroom with a shower should be considered a necessity if you plan on hosting guests.
Play Areas
An important aspect of a kid’s play area is that it should be easy to clean up spills and accidents. Consider adding a removable carpet area or large rugs to sit and play on. Cushions and bean bags make for comfortable alternatives to chairs in family rooms and playrooms. Storage should be easy for kids to access and move. Make the play area colorful, as colors are inviting and stimulate young minds. For older kids and young adults, a home gym can also be a good idea.
Basement bar
A sports team, video game, or movie-themed bar–tv room will appeal to the whole family. Watch sporting events or your favorite tv shows with your friends and family from a big comfy couch or stool at the basement bar. A basement bar remodeling project can also suit party hosts. Think about a pool table or table tennis table if there is leftover space. Family fun can also be had with a dartboard and foosball machine as these games accommodate multiple players.
Tips
- Soundproofing can help keep noise from invading the rest of the house.
- Put in extra windows to help with the lighting and ventilation.
